Web Writing: Where’s The Payoff?
(This is the promised sequel to “Equally Worthless? I Think Not.” Warning: this is very long, but, I think, may be worth it.)
The story so far: At this particular point in history, writers are in a strange new situation. The web gives everyone the chance to be seen and read—but the laws of supply and demand seem to suggest that as the supply of writers approaches infinity, the value of what we write approaches zero.
For this reason, it’s easy to take advantage of us.
