Today
is the 400th anniversary of the original Globe burning down. The fire
was started when a piece of wadding fired from a cannon, during a
performance of Henry VIII ended up in the thatched roof. The whole
building burnt to the ground ‘all in less than two hours the people
having enough to do to save themselves’ . Miraculously no-one was
injured, save for a man whose breeches caught fire. He managed to douse
the flames with some ale.
